It is an exposé about the Standard Oil Company, run at the time by oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller, the richest figure in American history. This is an abbreviated version of Tarbell's original History of the Standard Oil Company, written in 1903 and later edited by David Chambers in 1968. While thoroughly researched, the book is so full of tedious details and repetitions that it is difficult to keep track of who did what to whom. The book chronicles the rise of the Standard Oil from a tiny company in Ohio to the largest petroleum empire in the world at its time. Unfortunately many corrupt devices such as rebates from the railroads, kickbacks from other oil shipments, intimidation etc were key elements in the development of the I enjoyed The History of the Standard Oil very much. Written in 1904 by Ida Mae Tarbell, a well-known muckraker journalist of the early 20th century (that's a good thing, by the way), this book describes the start of the oil industry and its eventual demise as a competitive industry due to the antics of a consortium led by John D.
